Train Commuter Gathers Recyclable Bottles Amid Railroad Activity (BPOL-HH)
In the heart of Hamburg, on the evening of August 30, 2025, a 35-year-old man was found on the S-Bahn platform of the S-Bahn station Holstenstraße. The man, who was identified at the Federal Police Station Altona, was collecting bottles near the S-Bahn and long-distance railway tracks.
Surveillance camera footage from the S-Bahn station revealed that the man had been repeatedly entering the S-Bahn area and climbing over the cover of the S-Bahn power rails to collect more bottles from the parallel long-distance railway tracks.
Unfortunately, the man's actions caused an ICE train to be stopped by an emergency brake. The power rails in the S-Bahn area carry 1200 volts direct current, and touching them can result in fatal injuries. Train drivers of long-distance and S-Bahn trains cannot evade and the braking distances are often too long to prevent the impact of persons in the track area.
A criminal investigation was initiated against the man for suspected dangerous interference with rail traffic. A track closure for long-distance and S-Bahn traffic was initiated, including a power shutdown on S-Bahn power rails, to ensure safety.
No alcohol was detected in the man. After the completion of Federal Police measures, the man was allowed to leave the police station.
The press office of the Federal Police Inspectorate Hamburg warns against reckless behavior on railway premises. People often endanger themselves and others through their reckless actions. For further inquiries, please contact Police Commissioner Rüdiger Carstens at the Federal Police Inspectorate Hamburg.
The Federal Police cannot provide information on any possible disruptions in rail traffic. The track closures initiated for safety reasons were lifted at 20:05. However, video material cannot be made available in the ongoing criminal proceedings.
The incident serves as a reminder of the life-threatening dangers in the track area. It is crucial for everyone to be aware of the risks involved in venturing onto railway tracks, especially when they are electrified with 1200 volts direct current. Let's all be mindful and prioritise safety on our railway premises.
