Train line Amstetten-Gerstetten's Steam Locomotive Marks Matrimonial Milestone
Historic Steam Locomotive "Badnerin" to Return to Service in Spring 2026
After over a year of restoration, the historic steam locomotive "Badnerin" is set to return to service on the Amstetten-Gerstetten local railway in spring 2026. The locomotive, affectionately known as the "Badnerin," is a cherished part of the railway community and has been in operation since 1982.
The steam boiler of the "Badnerin," which is 110 years old, was sent to a special company in Poland for repairs due to leaks and material damage. After a year of meticulous work, the boiler has been returned to Amstetten. The boiler's journey home marked a significant milestone in the locomotive's restoration process.
Upon its return, the boiler was reunited with the locomotive's bogie, a process that was likened by Hans-Karl Kunhäuser, a board member of the Amstetten-Gerstetten local railway association and a railway enthusiast since 1977, to a wedding. Kuni, as he is fondly called, expressed some nervousness but also relief at this joyous occasion.
The reunion of the boiler and bogie is not the end of the restoration process, however. The water tanks, cab, pipes, and pumps still need to be attached to the "Badnerin." Additionally, the boiler and ash pan need to be "married" to ensure optimal steam performance.
The restoration of the "Badnerin" was made possible by the contributions of the members of the Amstetten-Gerstetten local railway association. More than 1,200 working hours and 150,000 euros were spent on the locomotive's restoration.
Once fully restored, the "Badnerin" will continue its journey between Amstetten and Gerstetten, adding a touch of history and charm to the Amstetten-Gerstetten local railway. It is worth noting that the Amstetten-Gerstetten local railway is a part of the Ulm Railway Friends.
Regarding the historic steam locomotive 75 1118, there is no publicly available information regarding a planned recommissioning date. However, the successful restoration of the "Badnerin" is a promising sign for steam locomotive enthusiasts.
As the "Badnerin" gears up for its return, it is a reminder of the passion and dedication of the railway community in preserving and showcasing historical pieces like this steam locomotive. The spring of 2026 can't come soon enough for those eager to see the "Badnerin" back in action.
