Freight ship halts train movement towards the island of Sylt - Train traveling to Sylt experiences halt due to another train's obstruction.
On Monday, a smoke-belching transporter on an auto train caused a one-hour disruption in rail traffic to the island of Sylt. The incident occurred at a level crossing in Niebuell, where the vehicle was unloaded from the Niebuell car ferry.
The transporter involved in the accident was a box van standing on a flat wagon of the red double-decker car shuttle train (Sylt Shuttle), operated by Deutsche Bahn. Specifically, the box van was on the lower deck of the transporter. The smoke originated from the engine compartment of the box van.
Shortly after the train passed the level crossing in Niebuell, the smoke started billowing, prompting firefighters to be called to cool the vehicle. The railway line in both directions was closed as a precaution.
The disruption in rail traffic lasted for one hour before the smoke was brought under control and the vehicle, which had been towed away from Niebuell car ferry, was removed from the tracks. Unfortunately, the incident meant that the auto train did not reach its destination, Sylt.
The Federal Police Inspectorate in Flensburg reported the incident, confirming that the train was headed for Sylt at the time of the disruption. The type of vehicle causing the disruption was not specified beyond being a transporter.
While the exact cause of the smoke is still under investigation, it is hoped that the situation will not recur and that rail traffic to Sylt will return to normal as soon as possible.
