Transformation of Broken Items to Innovative Solutions: Edinburgh's Festival of Restoration and Innovation
The Edinburgh International Book Festival is set to return from 9 to 24 August 2025, bringing together over 650 authors from 35 countries for a two-week "Repair" themed programme. The festival, known for its vibrant and diverse line-up of children's and young people's literature, will feature a terrific selection of writers like Michael Rosen, Julia Donaldson, Rob Biddulph, and Pamela Butchart for younger audiences.
This year's festival aims to explore the many things around us that feel broken and how we might seek to fix them. More than 5,000 children will visit the festival from schools across Scotland, and nearly as many again will visit with their families as part of the public program. The festival's young adult program is committed to turning around the literacy crisis and the decline of reading for pleasure among young people.
Examples of authors and events that embody the theme of repair in unexpected ways include sessions on the Japanese art of kintsugi, repairing a failing manuscript, and a cabaret on Frankenstein. The festival's approach to bike repair workshops is also noteworthy, with participating authors lending bicycles for their stay in Edinburgh to reduce the carbon footprint.
The festival will also feature two garden sheds programmed with practical repair activities for the festival's duration, including sewing, mending, bike repairs, and 3D printing. The Table Talks series at the festival brings people together over food and conversation with exciting food writers, fostering community and bonding.
For the older young adult audiences, the festival offers challenging topics as well as fun stuff. Events like Laura Bates talking with young people on feminism are aimed at engaging and inspiring attendees to take action in their own lives or communities.
