Transport for Greater Manchester sets in motion the revamp of Metrolink and railway infrastructure
In an exciting development for the transportation sector, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has initiated a procurement process to deliver a £1.6bn infrastructure project for the Metrolight network, Metrolink, starting in 2027.
The project aims to maintain and grow the Metrolink network, focusing on key infrastructure replacements, improvements, and expansions. The asset renewals program, a significant part of the £1.6bn investment, will involve replacing essential components like track, overhead lines, and the distribution system that provides power to trams.
Beyond the asset renewals, the new agreement, spanning up to 12 years, will encompass a broader range of additional works. These include Metrolink stop improvements, new stops, line extensions, vehicle infrastructure, Access for All rail schemes, and Travel Hubs. The works are designed to enhance the overall efficiency and accessibility of the Metrolink network.
TfGM is seeking innovative, efficient, and collaborative approaches to support their ambitions for a world-class, integrated Bee Network. The Chief network officer at TfGM, Danny Vaughan, has invited suppliers to help shape the next generation of Metrolink and rail accessibility infrastructure in Greater Manchester.
Interested parties are encouraged to engage with TfGM throughout the procurement process. The duration of the agreement is up to 12 years. More information about the project can be found on TfGM's official website.
On a separate note, the CiTTi Awards, an annual event celebrating achievements and innovations in transport planning, will take place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. More information about the CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the UK's transportation sector, can be found at www.cittiawards.co.uk.
The CiTTi Awards, though not directly related to the Metrolink project, are a testament to the ongoing commitment to innovation and progress in the transportation sector. As TfGM embarks on this significant infrastructure project, it is clear that the future of transport in Greater Manchester is set to be transformed.
