Former Federal Minister of Transport Volker Wissing Joins Business Sector

Volker Wissing, the former Federal Minister of Transport, is making a transition from politics to the business sector. The politician, who was a member of the traffic light coalition and held the office of Federal Minister of Transport, has been appointed as the chairman of the advisory board for Christ Capital GmbH.

This new role comes with significant implications, as the appointment requires approval from the federal government. Under the Ministerial Law, the federal government has the authority to prohibit such an activity for up to 18 months after leaving office if public interests are affected.

Christ Capital GmbH is an advisory body for a corporate group that includes the consulting firm "Joschka Fischer & Company." Wissing's new position at the company is with an old acquaintance from their shared FDP days, as the owner of Christ Capital GmbH is Harald Christ.

The potential prohibition of Wissing's appointment to the advisory board is based on the Ministerial Law. Public interests are affected if the activity is in areas where a former member of the federal government was active during their term of office. In Wissing's case, this could potentially involve areas where he was active as Federal Minister of Transport.

The federal government's decision to prohibit or allow Wissing's appointment to the advisory board could impact the corporate group, including Joschka Fischer & Company. This decision could have implications for future appointments of former federal ministers to similar positions.

Wissing was the Secretary General of the FDP from 2020 to 2022. After the coalition broke up in November 2022, he left the FDP. He remained the only liberal in the cabinet of Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) until the formation of the new black-red federal government in May 2023.

Wissing also temporarily took over the Federal Ministry of Justice from his former party colleague Marco Buschmann. His tenure in politics has come to an end, and he is now embarking on a new journey in the business sector. The federal government's decision regarding his appointment to the advisory board will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for future appointments of former federal ministers to similar positions.
