Trinamool Accuses BJP of Denying Sourav Ganguly a Second Term as BCCI Head Due to His Non-Alignment

In a surprising turn of events, former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly finds himself at the centre of political speculation, with the Trinamool Congress claiming that his not being granted a second term as BCCI President is a political vendetta.

The controversy began when it was reported that Ganguly was invited to a dinner by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025. This dinner, however, has not been confirmed as a political move by Ganguly, who has stated that he knows Amit Shah, the BJP leader, for a long time and the dinner was not a political move.

Ganguly, who has distanced himself from national politics, focusing solely on cricket management, has not been a member of any political party. He has also not been involved in any political discussions or decisions regarding his tenure as BCCI President.

The Trinamool Congress, however, is not backing down from their accusations. Trinamool MP Santanu Sen is expanding support to Ganguly, questioning why he would not get a second term as BCCI President. The party alleges that an elderly BJP leader visited Ganguly's house for dinner in May this year.

The BJP, on the other hand, denies the accusations of political vendetta. BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh has described the allegations as baseless, and the party has stated that they never attempted to induct Ganguly into their party.

Interestingly, Amit Shah's son, Jay Shah, can continue as BCCI Secretary despite a temporary term, while Ganguly cannot. Jay Shah has also submitted his nomination and will continue as BCCI Assistant for a second successive term if no other candidate emerges. He is expected to replace Ganguly as India's representative at the ICC Board.

Amidst this political drama, Roger Binny, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, has filed his nomination for BCCI President and is likely to be elected unopposed on October 18 in Mumbai. Ganguly is expected to describe the situation regarding the alleged dinner with the BJP leader.

It remains to be seen how this unfolds, but one thing is clear: Sourav Ganguly, a revered figure in Indian cricket, finds himself embroiled in a political controversy that threatens to overshadow his contributions to the sport.
