Triumph for Mumbru's "Warrior": Coach reclaims position

In a remarkable display of determination, national coach Alex Mumbru returned to the German team after a brief hospitalisation in Tampere, Finland. The 46-year-old Spaniard was admitted to the hospital on Monday due to an acute abdomen, a medical emergency causing severe abdominal pain that required immediate treatment.

Despite the unexpected setback, Mumbru took over the reins from World Cup-winning coach Gordon Herbert. His first challenge as coach was the round of 16 match against Portugal, a game he missed during the group stage due to his illness.

Mumbru's role in the game against Portugal was not as active as it typically is, suggesting that he was still recovering from his illness. However, his presence was felt throughout the match, as he maintained overall responsibility for the team and found the right words to calm and relax the players.

Captain Dennis Schröder praised Mumbru's resilience, stating that he is a "warrior" with a "mentality". Schröder highlighted that Mumbru's presence in the tournament was not guaranteed, and his comeback was greatly appreciated by the team.

During halftime of the game against Portugal, Mumbru took necessary measures to ease the tension among the players. His efforts paid off, as the German team celebrated a clear 85:58 victory over Portugal. The victory was dedicated to Mumbru by the team, with Schröder expressing gratitude towards him for his dedication despite his illness.

Assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic took over the team during the group phase, leading to five consecutive wins. During the game against Portugal, Mumbru and Ibrahimagic shared responsibilities, with Mumbru observing the game from a seated position for extended periods.

Mumbru's absence during the group stage did not affect the team's performance, as they secured their place in the quarterfinals. Maodo Lo stated that Mumbru's words during the game against Portugal were instrumental in helping the team to relax and focus on the game.

Not everyone would have the same determination to recover and coach as Mumbru did. Schröder acknowledged that, stating that Mumbru's comeback was an inspiration to everyone in the team. As the German team prepares for the quarterfinals, they will undoubtedly draw strength from Mumbru's resilience and determination.
