Troma's timeless cult classic, The Toxic Avenger, gets a contemporary makeover in this fresh review

In the world of superhero films, a familiar face has made a comeback with a bloody and gory twist. The Toxic Avenger, the classic Troma Entertainment film, has been remade by director Macon Blair, known for his work in films like Green Room and Blue Ruin. The film, now available in cinemas, maintains the original spirit of the iconic character while adding elements to appeal to modern audiences.

Peter Dinklage, renowned for his role in Game of Thrones, provides the voice for the mutated character Toxie. For the physical movements, Luisa Guerreiro performs in a suit, bringing the character to life. Dinklage also stars as Winston Gooze, a single dad and janitor who transforms into the titular toxic avenger after falling into a pool of toxic waste.

The film offers a silly and entertaining experience, with a breathless pacing that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. However, the excessive style threatens to bury relatable and universal themes underneath a lot of effects. Yet, they are still present in the film's narrative, providing a hint of Saw VI with a focus on showcasing greedy insurance companies.

The Toxic Avenger is not designed to be a major box-office hit but rather caters to a specific audience. The production of this remake involves Legendary Pictures, with the original producers from Troma Entertainment, Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz, collaborating in the reboot process.

Meanwhile, in the realm of horror, Leigh Whannell's creature feature Wolf Man is set to be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD in April. Osgood Perkins, director of the modern horror masterpiece Longlegs, is working on a new film titled The Young People.

Zach Cregger's new film, Weapons, is a terrifying and weird follow-up to his 2022 debut Barbarian. With a focus on practical effects, The Toxic Avenger keeps the unique Troma spirit alive, featuring excessive amounts of blood, limbs getting ripped off, and a mop eviscerating heads.

Jacob Tremblay's role as Winston's teenage son is underutilized in The Toxic Avenger, but the film still promises a thrilling and entertaining experience for fans of the original and newcomers alike.
