Tropical Storm Lorena strikes Los Cabos, sweeping towards the Baja California Peninsula.
Hurricane Lorena Threatens Western Mexico
Tropical Storm Lorena has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, prompting concerns and preparations along the west coast of Mexico. As of now, the U.S. National Hurricane Center is considering scenarios where the hurricane could remain in the Pacific Ocean for a longer period.
The hurricane is currently located 255 km west of Cabo San Lucas and 285 km west of Cabo San Lázaro, Baja California Sur. Moving northwest at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour, it is expected to make landfall Friday morning in western Baja California Sur. However, potential changes in the hurricane's path and intensity cannot be ruled out.
In 2019, Hurricane Lorena, with a similar name, hit near Los Cabos as a Category 1. The impact on urban areas was less severe, but it primarily caused damage to rural areas, roads, substandard housing, and power outages. This time around, authorities have urged residents to stay informed and closely monitor official advisories, as heavy rains of 75 to 150 millimeters (3 to 6 inches) are expected in the central and southern regions of Baja California Sur and Sonora, as well as Sinaloa.
The forecasted winds could knock down trees and billboards, and the expected rainfall may bring lightning, hail, and could lead to flooding and mudslides. In light of these potential dangers, local authorities in Los Cabos have ordered all schools to close as a preventive measure.
Baja California, Nayarit, and Jalisco will also experience heavy rainfall. The warnings before Hurricane Lorena in the Los Cabos region were issued by the local Civil Protection authority during a special session led by Governor Víctor Castro of Baja California Sur.
The official forecast predicts that Lorena could intensify into a Category 2 hurricane. After crossing the Baja California Peninsula, the hurricane is expected to reach the coast of Sonora on Saturday, near Guaymas.
Officials remind citizens to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Stay safe, and follow all official advisories as they are issued.
