Trouble looms in Nigeria's educational system - Epelle's report
In a recent interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, the Chairman of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Special Committee on Examination Infractions (SCEI), Jake Epelle, expressed his concerns over the high level of examination fraud in Nigeria, particularly in the University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
During the last UTME, the committee uncovered over 4,000 cases of exam fraud. Epelle emphasised that the majority of these cases, approximately 80%, were caused by parents who want to give undeserved marks to their children.
Epelle described the manipulations and transactions uncovered as "mind-blowing". He stated that some individuals are interested in compromising JAMB's operations. Computer-based centres found culpable in the fraud cases will be shut down, and their owners will be jailed.
The JAMB chairman also called for the naming and shaming of parents involved in UTME malpractices. He mentioned that some parents, after making threats and going on air with Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), beg JAMB officials when they start interrogating and investigating the cases.
Epelle emphasised that it is not a question of investigating the fraud cases and letting people go scot-free. He reiterated his desire to see those responsible for the fraud "in jail".
The 20 tertiary institutions investigated by JAMB for illegal admissions include several universities, polytechnics, and colleges in Nigeria. However, the specific names have not been publicly disclosed in detail.
JAMB, according to Epelle, has one of the best technologies for managing examinations. He emphasised that the situation would have been worse if JAMB had not utilised technology in its operations. Epelle stated that he wanted to see those responsible for the fraud "in jail".
In conclusion, Epelle's comments highlight the seriousness of examination fraud in Nigeria and JAMB's commitment to combating it. The chairman's calls for justice and transparency underscore the need for parents, students, and educational institutions to uphold the integrity of the examination process.
