Trump and Putin's encounter attended by Britta Haßelmann
In a recent statement, German politician Britta Haßelmann urged Friedrich Merz to collaborate closely with European leaders in devising a robust response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The call comes after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has failed to bring about any significant peace prospects for Ukraine.
The meeting, which took place in August 2025, was discussed as a potential trilateral summit involving Ukrainian President Zelensky. However, no specific date has been set for this gathering. Trump has expressed his willingness to participate if needed.
Haßelmann's statement provided insights into the meeting, highlighting Putin's continued aggression towards Ukraine. She asserted that Putin has the ability to end the war instantly but instead continues to militarily conquer and politically subjugate the country.
Haßelmann also criticised Putin for not offering a ceasefire during the meeting. She expressed concern over the brutal attacks on the Ukrainian population that have continued unabated during apparent negotiations.
In her statement, Haßelmann emphasised the need for Europe to intervene consistently, with strong, united action. She suggested that European military support for Ukraine is crucial, and Russian assets could be used to rebuild the war-torn nation.
Trump, in response, has promised to represent Ukrainian and European interests and has hinted at tougher sanctions against Russian trading partners. However, Putin seems to have escaped the consequences of these sanctions thus far.
The Russian shadow fleet, according to Haßelmann, must be targeted and consistently sanctioned to put pressure on Putin to negotiate in good faith. Europe must also ensure that decisions about Ukraine are made with Ukraine, as the situation for the country has not improved.
Haßelmann's statement serves as a call to action for Europe and the US to work together to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine and hold Putin accountable for his actions. The future of Ukraine hangs in the balance, and decisive action is needed to bring about peace and stability.
