Trump announces preparedness for imposing fresh sanctions on Russia
The U.S. President made a significant statement during an exclusive interview with Meet the Press on September 7, 2025. The interview, which can be found at this link: https://t.co/Ro6BtdFtjP, included a picture (pic.twitter.com/fvk73dIokv).
During the interview, President Trump confirmed his readiness for "Phase Two" sanctions against Russia. He stated that Vladimir Putin knows his position and will make a decision one way or another regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. If Putin does not continue cooperation in talks to end the war, the U.S. President indicated that "you will see what happens."
The U.S. has conditioned additional sanctions related to Russian oil purchases on all NATO allies ceasing to buy Russian oil. However, no concrete additional sanctions have been reported against specific countries for this reason, as several NATO countries continue purchasing Russian oil. This has prevented any new sanctions from being imposed so far.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the importance of cooperation with European partners in imposing these sanctions. He stated that the goal of these sanctions is to "crush" Russia's economy. Bessent also highlighted the race between the Ukrainian army's ability to hold out and Russia's economy's ability to withstand.
It is important to note that no action has been taken against Russia since President Trump took office. Clips of Trump's speech were published on the official Rapid Response 47 account of the White House on social network X.
In response to a reporter's question during a speech, the White House chief admitted that the administration may take action against Moscow if Putin does not continue cooperation in talks to end the war in Ukraine.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent also stated that the U.S. is ready to cooperate with European partners to impose additional sanctions on countries buying Russian oil. This cooperation is crucial in the U.S.'s efforts to put pressure on Russia and bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
