Trump confronted by Mamdani, urged to have a debate to bypass intermediaries, following Cuomo's advocacy for New York City mayoral debates
In the heated race for New York City Mayor, the four candidates are facing off in a contest that seems to have more twists and turns than a Coney Island roller coaster.
The latest development came when former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary by 13 points, endorsed the idea of Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa dropping out of the race. However, Cuomo denied having any contact with President Trump or the administration, stating that he would never accept an endorsement from Mr. Trump and has nothing to do with the administration's reported interest in the mayor's race.
Cuomo believes he has the best chance to win head-to-head against Zohran Mamdani in the general election. In a bold move, Cuomo challenged Mamdani to several debates, an offer Mamdani has yet to accept. Interestingly, Mamdani proposed debating President Trump instead of Cuomo's chosen opponent.
Mamdani, currently leading the polls, has been vocal about his opposition to Trump's policies. He criticised Trump for cutting SNAP benefits to fund tax cuts for billionaire donors. Trump, in response, expressed disapproval of a communist becoming mayor of New York City, seemingly referring to Mamdani's political leanings.
Meanwhile, Adams, who has received reelection endorsements from Muslim community leaders and has called for the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad to become a city holiday, has denied conducting any campaigning or governmental-related duties during his trip to Florida. He met with Steve Witkoff, a New York real estate investor and close adviser to the president, during this trip.
Businessman John Catsimatidis predicts "something" will happen before the end of September after speaking with Mr. Trump. Sliwa, on the other hand, has stated unequivocally that he is not dropping out under any circumstance.
As the race heats up, the candidates continue to engage in debates and discussions, with Cuomo and Mamdani at the forefront. The general election promises to be an exciting showdown, with the outcome still uncertain.
