Trump guarantees continued American military presence within Polish territory, assuring the nation's leader of unwavering military commitment.

In a significant development, President Donald Trump has endorsed Karol Nawrocki, the newly elected President of Poland, during his first overseas trip since taking office.

Trump's endorsement comes after a series of public statements expressing his support for Nawrocki before Poland's election this spring. The American President had made it clear that he wanted Nawrocki to win, promising closer military ties if the Poles elected him.

Currently, approximately 8,200 American troops are stationed in Poland, with the force level regularly fluctuating, according to the Pentagon. In a show of solidarity, Trump has pledged to continue the US military presence in Poland and may even increase it if requested.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem travelled to Poland shortly before the May election to reinforce the message, telling Poles that if they elected Nawrocki and other conservatives, they would have a strong ally in Trump.

Nawrocki, a former amateur boxer and historian who was backed by the conservative Law and Justice party, thanked Trump for his support and emphasised the importance of the relationship between Poland and the US.

The US-Polish relationship, according to Trump, is stronger than ever. This strong bond is based on shared values of independence and democracy.

However, there is heightened anxiety in Poland and across Europe about Trump's long-term commitment to a strong US military presence on the continent. This anxiety stems from Trump's tense relations with the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, an ally of Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who lost to Nawrocki in a tight election.

Nawrocki pursues a nationalist and conservative policy that openly opposes Tusk's liberal government. He has vetoed laws supporting Ukrainian refugees, blocked the extension of social benefits for them, and expressed skepticism towards deeper European integration and NATO expansion to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Trump is frustrated with his inability to get Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for direct talks aimed at ending the war. Putin has proposed a meeting with Zelenskyy in Moscow, which Kyiv has swiftly rejected.

Some key advisers in the Trump administration favour shifting US troops and military from Europe to the Indo-Pacific. However, Trump's commitment to Poland remains steadfast, as evidenced by the hearty slap on the shoulder he gave Nawrocki and the US military jets soaring over the South Lawn as they watched during the President's visit.

In a poignant moment, a group of F-16s flew in a missing man formation as a tribute to a Polish Air Force F-16 pilot, Major Maciej "Slab" Krakowian, who died in a crash in Poland on 28 August. This tribute underscores the deep respect and friendship between the two nations.

As the political landscape of Europe continues to evolve, the US-Polish relationship remains a beacon of shared values and mutual support.
