Trump Intends to Stop Voting by Executive Order
In a series of announcements made on his online platform Truth Social, former U.S. President Donald Trump has outlined plans to overhaul the nation's voting procedures. However, the legal clarity of these proposals remains unclear.
Trump's proposals include the imposition of a mandatory ID requirement for all voters in national elections, a broad ban on mail-in voting, and a demand for an end to the use of voting machines. Instead, he advocates for the use of paper ballots and manual counting.
The former President has long expressed doubts about the U.S. election system, falsely claiming that his defeat against Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 was due to massive fraud. He and his Republican allies have made unfounded claims about alleged mass voting by non-citizens.
Trump's plan to ban widespread mail-in voting would make exceptions only for the severely ill and remotely stationed military personnel. He has also insisted that there must be no exceptions to the ID requirement for every single vote.
Election officials have voiced concerns about these proposals, arguing that manual counting is time-consuming, expensive, and less accurate than machine counting. They also question the feasibility of implementing such sweeping changes through a presidential decree.
Trump's proposals, if enacted, could significantly alter the way Americans vote and have sparked debate and controversy across the political spectrum. As of now, the legal and practical implications of these proposals remain uncertain.
