Trump Ordered to Pay $83 Million to Author Jean Carroll for Defamation Lawsuit Settlement in a US Court
In a significant ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has upheld a decision requiring President Donald Trump to pay over $83 million to E. Jean Carroll. This amount, approximately €71 million, was ordered in relation to a defamation case filed by the writer and journalist.
The defamation occurred after Carroll publicly accused President Trump of sexual assault. A New York jury found it proven in another trial that Trump sexually abused and defamed Carroll. Trump's lawyers have used the argument of presidential immunity to try to block any legal action against him, both criminal and civil. However, the judges ruled that Trump cannot claim presidential immunity in this case.
The ruling was in response to President Trump defaming Carroll. Trump has been ordered to pay the sum to Carroll for the damages caused by his defamatory statements. This is not the first case against President Trump for sexual abuse and defamation. The case was first revealed by Carroll in 2019.
