Chicago and New York City, two of America's largest urban centres, are grappling with challenges in their education systems. Over the past decade, school outlays in Chicago have nearly doubled, yet scores and standards have fallen significantly. In New York City, spending per child exceeds $42,000 annually, accounting for nearly one-third of the city's budget.

However, the results are concerning. Last year, only 29% of Chicago kids could read at grade level, and 18% were proficient at math. In New York City, only 33% of fourth graders scored proficiency in math, and 28% in reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The failure rate among minorities in Chicago schools is especially concerning, with only 17% of Black eighth-grade students passing algebra.

The Trump administration has taken steps to address these issues. The Department of Education has been dismantled, and an executive order was issued overturning Obama-Biden guidance on discipline considering race and equity. The Trump administration is also rolling out steps to expand school choice nationwide.

In Chicago, recent contract negotiations with the teachers union included 700 demands, estimated to cost $10 billion, focusing on issues unrelated to education such as restorative justice coordinators, more holidays for teachers, and gender-affirming care. This has led to criticism, particularly after a Supreme Court ruling, with the largest teachers union criticizing cuts to the Department of Education.

The NEA teachers union has been accused of prioritizing fighting against Trump over reading and writing. In contrast, the Trump Department of Education is focusing on measures to drive down crime, favour open borders, and encourage biological men to compete in women's sports.

In politics, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson received strong support from teachers unions during his campaign. Meanwhile, Republican-led states have been adopting policies giving parents a choice of schooling options since 2021.

The search results do not contain information about any organizations donating over 50 million US dollars to left-wing groups in 2022. However, a report shows that America's two largest teachers' unions, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, have collectively funneled nearly $50 million to left-wing groups since 2022.

As families look forward to their children returning to school, those trapped in failing schools in Democrat-run cities like New York and Chicago will face defeat and disappointment. Far too many Black and brown children are being left behind in the nation's failing education system, with excuses being made and standards being lowered. The future of education in these cities remains a contentious issue, with debates around funding, policies, and accountability ongoing.
