Trump set to appear at US Open men's finale, contingent on broadcast guidelines silencing audience uproars
Donald Trump Attends US Open Tennis Final Amidst Security Measures and Celebrity Presence
In a shift from campaign-style rallies, former President Donald Trump made an appearance at the US Open Tennis Championship in New York City on Sunday. Trump, accompanied by senior White House officials, watched the highly-anticipated men's final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz from Rolex's suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has been a regular at major sporting events. He has attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500, UFC fights in Miami and Newark, the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia, and the FIFA Club World Cup final in New Jersey. However, this was his first attendance at the US Open since 2015.
The US Tennis Association (USTA) instructed broadcasters not to air crowd reactions to Trump's presence. Despite this, the crowd at the US Open featured numerous celebrities, including Pink, Bruce Springsteen, Shonda Rhimes, Michael J. Fox, Sting, Shaggy, Ben Stiller, and Courteney Cox. Many of these celebrities publicly backed then-Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 election campaign, but there are no publicly available reports or confirmed information about any of them attending the 2023 US Open Tennis Championship.
Trump's presence at the US Open caused a minor delay due to extra security screening, pushing back the start of the match by half an hour. World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who is 22 years old, stated beforehand that he would try not to be focused on Trump's attendance to avoid being nervous. Defending champion Jannik Sinner, who is 24 years old, remained focused on the match, determined to defend his title.
Rolex extended the invitation to Trump despite his administration's policy moves impacting its home country. In 2020, the US administration imposed a 39% tariff on Swiss products, including those from Rolex's home city, Geneva. Trump, on Air Force One en route to New York, declined to give further remarks about his US Open attendance.
Alcaraz expressed that having any US President watch the final is great for tennis. However, some fans made quiet wardrobe choices to avoid confusion with Trump's political branding, demonstrating the divisive nature of his presence even at a sporting event. Despite this, the US Open final proceeded without large-scale street protests near the stadium.
As the match unfolded, the focus remained on the tennis, with Sinner eventually emerging victorious. The final score was 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 in Sinner's favour. Trump's presence at the US Open Tennis Championship was a reminder of his continued influence, even as the country moves forward.
