Trump suggests legal action against Beyoncé for alleged monetary backing of Harris endorsement
=================================================================================
In the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election, a series of allegations have surfaced regarding the financial aspects of celebrity endorsements. One of the most high-profile cases involves pop superstar Beyoncé and her endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
On October 2022, Beyoncé made her endorsement of Harris official at a rally in Houston, Texas. During her speech, she expressed her support for Harris' presidential bid, stating, "It's time for America to sing a new song." The rally was also attended by fellow singer and Destiny's Child alum, Kelly Rowland.
However, just a few months later, former President Donald Trump accused Beyoncé of receiving $11 million for her endorsement of Harris. Trump made this allegation on his Truth Social platform on July 26, 2023. The original figure has not been substantiated, and there are no credible sources confirming that Beyoncé was paid during Harris' presidential campaign.
The Harris campaign has previously rejected the rumour of paying Beyoncé $10 million for her endorsement. In response to Trump's allegations, the campaign has remained silent, with the USA TODAY article not reporting any comments from them regarding the matter.
Beyoncé herself has not commented on the allegations made by Trump. However, her mother, Tina Knowles, denied the $10 million rumour about Beyoncé receiving payment from the Harris campaign in a November 2023 Instagram post.
It is worth noting that the Federal Election Commission does not have rules explicitly prohibiting candidates from paying for endorsements. However, the commission has no record of an $11 million payment to Beyoncé from Harris' presidential campaign at the time of Trump's original allegations in May.
Trump has announced plans for a "major investigation" into the Harris campaign's celebrity endorsements. He concluded that if politicians start paying for endorsements, "all hell would break out" and that Harris and others who received endorsement money "broke the law" and should be prosecuted.
Beyoncé has been a long-time supporter of Harris, with the two even sharing a friendship outside of politics. Harris attended Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour in 2023, after Beyoncé had gifted Harris tickets to the show. The "Cowboy Carter" songstress also cleared the usage of her 2016 song "Freedom" for Harris, and the tune became the Democratic nominee's official campaign song.
At her October 2023 appearance at Harris' rally, Beyoncé emphasised her support for Harris, stating, "I'm not here as a celebrity... I'm here as a mother," and emphasising that "your freedom is your God-given right, your human right."
Trump's allegations against Beyoncé are not isolated, as he has also accused media mogul Oprah Winfrey and civil rights activist Al Sharpton of receiving payments for their endorsements.
USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Beyoncé for comment on the matter, but as of now, no response has been received. The investigation into the Harris campaign's celebrity endorsements continues, with the public awaiting more information on the allegations made by Trump.
