Trump's attempts to secure a beneficial result for Ukraine Face Skepticism Amongst Partisans
In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his readiness for a direct meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This announcement comes after a series of high-level meetings and negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the three-and-a-half-year-long war.
During a White House meeting, Zelensky presented a clearer picture of the battlelines to President Donald Trump, who has been pushing for a favorable outcome for Ukraine and Europe in the war against Russia. However, concerns have been raised about Trump's approach, with European Parliament Member Rihards Kols (National Alliance) expressing skepticism about Trump's efforts. Kols believes that the protracted peace talks and constant postponement, arguing over minor details, could lead to the legitimization of peace without ending the war.
As the pressure to cede territory mounts, Zelensky has stated that plans for security guarantees would be formalized in the next week or ten days. These guarantees are expected to be provided by various European countries in coordination with the United States of America, according to French President Emmanuel Macron. Notably, France, the United Kingdom, and several smaller European countries have committed to providing security guarantees to Ukraine in case of a peace agreement, including potentially sending troops as part of a "coalition of the willing."
The meeting between Zelensky and Putin would mark the first face-to-face encounter since Moscow's invasion. Several European leaders have supported Zelensky's readiness for a bilateral meeting with Putin, according to reports. However, Trump has not set any parameters on what will happen if Putin does not take part in any format of peace talks, according to Kols.
In the past, Trump has been criticized for being more lenient towards Russian dictator Vladimir Putin than towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the Alaska summit, Putin was seen as the biggest beneficiary, as Trump gave him the opportunity to emerge on the international scene after years of isolation, according to Kols.
Zelensky has emphasized the importance of the United States giving a clear signal that it will assist, coordinate, and participate in security guarantees for Ukraine. Following the summit, Zelensky confirmed that he is ready for a bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin, signaling a potential breakthrough in the long-standing conflict. The details of the meeting and the negotiations that will follow remain to be seen, but the international community is hopeful that this step will bring Ukraine one step closer to peace.
