Turkey and Syria initiate far-reaching educational collaboration

In a significant development, the Syrian Minister of Education, Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko, has held official talks in Damascus with his Turkish counterpart, Yusuf Tekin, the Turkish Minister of National Education. The discussions mark the beginning of a comprehensive cooperation process between the two countries in the field of education.

Tekin announced that this collaboration will involve joint work on curriculum, textbooks, and teacher training, with a focus on restructuring education processes, revising curricula, and designing textbooks. Redesigning the curriculum is a top priority identified by Syrian authorities within this cooperation.

The Turkish national education minister emphasized Turkey's readiness to support efforts that will contribute to strengthening Syria. Tekin stressed that Turkey's approach and policy are focused on helping its neighbor stand strong as a prosperous, independent, and sovereign country.

Over the past year, approximately 800,000 Syrian students have been enrolled in Turkish schools, and over 400,000 Syrians, including young people and students, have returned to Turkey since last December, when the Assad regime fell. Coordinating the dignified and voluntary return of Syrian students is an important issue in the cooperation process.

Discussions also included technical topics such as aligning returning students with Syria’s education system according to grade levels, preparing relevant legislation, and restructuring examination systems. Joint working groups have been formed to evaluate the progress of the cooperation process.

Turkey will share its expertise in teacher training as part of the cooperation framework. Tekin highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral ties, especially considering Turkey's goal of being terror-free. Yusuf Tekin, the Turkish education minister, emphasized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's commitment to a strong, independent Syria where peace and human rights prevail.

The collaboration between Turkey and Syria in education will be built on mutual respect and serve as a model for international partnerships. Tekin stated that Turkish officials have maintained continuous contact with their Syrian counterparts since the fall of the former regime last year. He mentioned that he spoke with the Syrian Education Minister Mohammad Abdulrahman Tarko and Higher Education Minister Marwan Al-Halabi about the present and future of the cooperation process.

The Syrian education minister, Mohammed Abdul Rahman Turko, attaches great importance to Turkey's experience and expertise in the education sector and has requested support. Tekin expressed Turkey's readiness to support these efforts and to contribute to strengthening Syria. The Turkey-Syria education cooperation is expected to have a significant impact on the education sector in both countries and the region as a whole.
