Cerritos High School Wins Fifth Straight League Title, Advances to Playoffs

In a season filled with ups and downs, Cerritos High School has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, winning their fifth straight league title and securing a spot in the CIF-Southern Section divisional playoffs in Division 9.

The junior quarterback, Justin Sagun, has been instrumental in the team's success, completing 112 passes in 167 attempts for 1,263 yards and 15 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Ruben Castro is Sagun's favourite target, amassing 60 receptions, 772 yards, and eight touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Dikshanta Adhikari also had a standout performance last Friday, catching a pair of touchdown passes and adding a five-yard touchdown run.

Junior running back Josiah Ungos is second in rushing for the team, with 366 yards and five touchdowns. Maximus Garcia, a junior lineman, leads the team with three sacks, while five players all have a pair of interceptions. The defense has allowed 135 points, with three shutouts and two other games a touchdown each.

Senior linebacker DeAngelo Tucker leads the team with 39 tackles, with junior lineman Maximus Garcia two behind that total and sophomore linebacker Robert Garcia at 36 tackles. The defense of Cerritos High School is led by senior quarterback Charlie Lopez, juniors Jacob Hoosac and Tyler Ky, and junior lineman Makai Ortiz.

Cerritos High School will face Whittier Christian High School in their first CIF Southern Section Division 9 playoff game.

Meanwhile, La Puente High School has had a mixed season. Junior Preyer has 28 receptions, 445 yards, and seven touchdowns, while Aaron Silva has rushed for 986 yards and 16 touchdowns. However, the team has allowed 102 points. Junior quarterback Ezekeil Zamora has completed 125 of 188 passes for 1,818 yards and 25 touchdowns, with Ivan Lopez leading the team with 50 receptions, 795 yards, and eight touchdowns.

Highland High School began the season with three straight losses but bounced back to win the next five contests, with three straight shutouts included in that stretch. Artesia High School, on the other hand, has been led by senior running back Julius Padilla, junior running backs Josue Flores and Joe Thomas Jr., and senior wide receiver Ahkil Sampson, who has 22 catches, 442 yards, and seven touchdowns.

In a crucial game last Friday, Cerritos High School defeated Artesia High School 36-7 to secure their league title and extend their winning streak to five games. A Gahr win against La Puente means it will host Desert Hot Springs High or visit ABC Unified School District rival Artesia next Friday.

Desert Hot Springs began the season with three straight wins before losing three straight contests. Senior linebacker Nathaniel Crawford, juniors Jacob Hoosac and Tyler Ky, and junior lineman Makai Ortiz are leaders of the defense of Cerritos High School. Jaire Broach has 125 tackles and Jaymere Broach 107, while Isaiah Flenor has seven sacks for Desert Hot Springs.

As the playoffs approach, the teams are gearing up for a fierce battle, with Cerritos High School looking to continue their winning streak and defend their league title.
