Two girls from L-L who play tennis emerge victorious in the USTA essay competition
In the world of Lancaster tennis, the upcoming week promises excitement and potential decisive matches. On Thursday, Section Three will see a significant clash as Country Day (1-2) takes on Lancaster Catholic (1-0). This encounter could very well determine the section's outcome.
Meanwhile, in Denver, Solanco and Cocalico, both undefeated teams with 5-0 records, will face each other. The Barons, one of four 5-0 teams in the first two weeks of the season, will be looking to maintain their winning streak.
Elsewhere, Section One will kick off on Thursday with a key event: Hempfield (3-1) will square off against Manheim Township (4-0). Last week, Cocalico secured an unexpected 3-2 victory over defending Section Three champion Lancaster Country Day.
The local tennis scene is not just about match results, though. Two inspiring stories have emerged from the Lancaster Tennis & Education Foundation's 2025 United States Tennis Association Essay Contest. Jade Flores, a senior at Conestoga Valley, and Ruth Abera, a freshman at McCaskey, were the contest winners. Their essays detailed their experiences of overcoming challenges, setbacks, or failures.
Flores, who also won an $80,000 college scholarship from the USTA Foundation in July while on a college trip to Miami, and Abera, who came to America from Addis Ababa six years ago, found tennis through family connections. Highlights for Flores at the U.S. Open from Aug. 19-23 included the Stars of the Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium, doing the coin flip for a men's singles match, and being allowed in the Presidents Suite.
Abera, who found confidence in her play, academics, and life in general through tennis, also enjoyed meeting people who shared her love for the sport and watching stars play. Both Flores and Abera are leadership team members with Tennis Central National Junior Tennis & Learning Chapter, a nonprofit that provides opportunities to over 2,000 Lancaster youth annually.
In other news, E-town currently stands at 2-2 after a challenging early season schedule. They will face Wilson again on Friday, who already defeated Hempfield 5-0. Section One's Crusaders are at Annville-Cleona, while the Cougars host Pequea Valley on Tuesday.
The tennis season in Lancaster continues to be a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the power of sport to inspire and bring communities together. Stay tuned for more updates!
