Two individuals sustain severe injuries following a second incident involving sleep.

In an unfortunate incident, a car-trailer accident occurred on the A33 near Bielefeld on Tuesday, 02.09.2025, around 3:00 AM.

The accident involved a 71-year-old driver from Bielefeld who dozed off in his 1-series BMW near the 'Letzter Heller' rest area. The vehicle collided with a traffic sign and a tree, causing the trailer and its cargo to scatter across the right lane.

Both the driver and his 67-year-old passenger sustained severe injuries. They managed to free themselves from the vehicle and were treated by first responders before being taken to a hospital for further treatment. The accompanying dog was taken to an animal shelter.

The police have seized the driver's license, reminding drivers to take sufficient breaks on long journeys due to the underestimated risk of fatigue in road traffic.

The vehicle was a total loss and had to be towed away. The estimated total damage of the accident is around 30,000 euros.
