Two individuals sustain significant injuries due to a second incident involving sleep.
On Tuesday, 02.09.2025, a single-vehicle accident occurred on the A33 near Bielefeld, causing significant damage and resulting in serious injuries for the driver and his passenger.
The incident involved a 1-series BMW driven by a 71-year-old man from Bielefeld. According to reports, the man lost control of the vehicle due to falling asleep at the wheel, causing the car and trailer combination to collide with a road sign and a tree. The trailer and its contents scattered across the entire right lane of the A33.
Bystanders provided first aid to the driver and his 67-year-old passenger before emergency services arrived. Both individuals were subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the couple's dog was taken to an animal shelter.
The vehicle was declared a write-off and had to be towed away. The estimated total damage from the accident is around 30,000 euros.
The police are reminding drivers to take sufficient breaks on long journeys to reduce the risk of accidents due to fatigue. The driver's license of the 71-year-old man from Bielefeld was seized by the police.
