The Hawaii International Tropical Fruit Growers (HTFG) and Hawaii Master Food Preservers (HMFP) have announced their annual conferences, set to take place in Hilo from October 23 to 26.

The 35th HTFG Conference, themed "Digging Deeper," will take place from October 24 to 26 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Early-bird registration for the conference offers a 50% discount, available through Sept. 1. The keynote speaker for the HTFG conference will be Yoshimi Yonemoto, who will deliver a talk on "Pruning, Pollination and Predictions to Produce More Fruit."

The HTFG conference is open to farmers, educators, orchard managers, and proponents of sustainable agriculture. The event will feature a trade show, fruit tasting, discussions on ag theft, new local research, and legislative updates. Attendees are also invited to tour local farms on Oct. 26.

The conferences will also include educational offerings on growing dwarf trees, creating healthy soil, and quality crop production. Derek Kurisu of KTA Super Stores will also be present at the HMFP conference.

Prior to the HTFG conference, the HMFP will hold its first conference on October 23. Carla Schwan, director of the National Center for Home Food Preservation, will headline the HMFP conference. The one-day conference includes presentations on value-added product development, food safety, updates on the state's cottage industry laws, and updates from the USDA, the U.S. Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center, and the Maui Innovation Center. A panel will discuss current successful preserved food products in the HMFP conference.

Ken Love, president of the HMFP and executive director of HTFG, states that the food preservers conference is a good opportunity for budding entrepreneurs to explore the local food cottage industry. He encourages everyone interested in tropical fruit farming and food preservation to attend the conferences.

Both conferences are open to the public. The lineup of speakers and activities for each conference can be viewed on the HMFP website (mfphawaii.org) and the HTFG website (www.HTFG.org). Early-bird registration for the conferences offers a 50% discount, available through Aug. 31 for the HTFG conference and through Sept. 1 for the HMFP conference.
