Two Scottish siblings achieve unprecedented feat in ocean rowing, breaking current global record.
In an incredible feat of human endurance, the Maclean brothers - Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan - have broken the world record for the fastest human-powered crossing of the Pacific Ocean. The trio, who previously held the record for the fastest and youngest trio to row the Atlantic Ocean, completed their epic journey on August 30, 2022, after a grueling 139-day, 5 hour, and 52-minute voyage.
The brothers embarked on their record-breaking expedition aboard their custom-built boat, Rose Emily, which was launched from Yacht Club Peruano in April. The boat, weighing 280kg, had no resupplies or safety boat, making their achievement even more impressive.
During their journey, the Maclean brothers faced numerous challenges, including navigating through treacherous waters and battling harsh weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, they managed to row in two-hour shifts and raised more than £200,000 for The Maclean Foundation, a charity they founded with the aim of providing clean water projects, particularly in Madagascar, where currently only 14% of the population in the community of Ambohimanarina has access to clean drinking water.
Upon landing in the Australian city of Cairns, the brothers were reunited with more than 50 family and friends who made the trip from the UK. Middle brother Jamie, 31, expressed his desire for a pizza upon landing and described the journey as the most "incredible, relentless, and often surreal" experience of his life.
The Maclean Foundation's goal is to raise funds for clean water projects, with the funds helping to build boreholes and water systems to improve the situation in Madagascar. So far, the brothers have raised more than £790,000 for their clean water charity.
The brothers' remarkable achievement has garnered support from celebrities such as actor Mark Wahlberg and Michael "Flea" Balzary, the bassist for Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Maclean brothers' boat was also cheered on by hundreds of supporters and the Peruvian Navy brass band when they set off on their journey.
The previous record was held by Russian Fedor Konyukhov, who rowed 7,393 miles from Chile to Australia in 2014. But the Maclean brothers have now become the first team ever recorded to row from South America to Australia, setting a new world record for their incredible feat.
Since landing, the brothers have developed a newfound appreciation for basic amenities like showers, lying in bed, and stationary objects after the grueling journey. They have certainly proved that with determination, teamwork, and a strong sense of purpose, even the most challenging of goals can be achieved.
