U.S. Imports Dropped to Lowest Point Since July 2021

The German Federal Statistical Office recently reported that the country's exports showed a mixed picture in July, with some regions experiencing growth while others saw a decline.

In a notable development, exports to other EU countries increased compared to June, marking a 2.5 percent rise in goods exported. The increase in exports to EU countries amounted to 19.5 billion euros, with 52.0 billion euros worth of goods being exported to Eurozone countries alone.

However, exports to the USA decreased in July, a trend that has been ongoing for the fourth consecutive month. The decrease in exports to the USA was not reflected in overall exports, which only decreased by 0.6 percent. The decline in exports to the USA is attributed to Washington's trade policy, which has been a point of contention between the US administration under President Donald J. Trump and European nations.

The trade policy, which led to a decline in German exports to the USA, culminated in the announcement and negotiation of tariffs on EU imports. A key agreement was reached on July 27, 2025, between Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Unfortunately, exports to China and the UK also decreased in July. The reasons for the decrease in exports to these countries are not specified in the report.

Contrary to the declines in certain regions, exports to third countries outside the EU only decreased by 0.6 percent in July. The German Federal Statistical Office did not report specific details about the decrease in exports to third countries outside the EU on Monday.

It is worth noting that the overall exports in July amounted to 74.8 billion euros, a figure that represents a 7.9 percent decrease compared to June. Compared to July 2024, exports also fell by 14.1 percent. The decrease reached the lowest level since December 2021.

In June, goods worth 55.3 billion euros were exported to third countries outside the EU. The majority of German exports in July continued to go to the USA.

The report provides a snapshot of the current state of Germany's international trade, highlighting both positive and negative trends. As the global trade landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these trends develop in the coming months.
