Coco Gauff Advances to Face Naomi Osaka in U.S. Open Quarterfinals

After a strong performance in the 2023 U.S. Open, 18-year-old Coco Gauff will face Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals on Monday. This is a rematch of their 2019 encounter, where Osaka came out on top.

In her third-round match against Magdalena Frech of Poland, Gauff demonstrated her strengths on the court. Her defence, superiority once the ball was in play, and impressive baseline exchanges were all on display. Gauff took 35 out of 51 points when their rallies lasted more than four shots.

Gauff started the match strongly, not getting broken in her opening service game and maintaining a 3-2 lead. However, she encountered trouble, getting broken and falling behind. But she recovered admirably, winning the next three games to close out the first set.

Gauff's serve, a major issue this season, showed improvement against Frech. She recorded only four double-faults and one break, with a serve percentage of 76%. Her speed was impressive, averaging 98 mph with a high of 113 mph. Moreover, she did not double-fault in her first service game.

To address her serving issues, Gauff hired Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics expert who previously worked with Aryna Sabalenka. MacMillan's goal was to help Gauff improve her serve before the 2025 US Open, as she struggled with serving consistency and double faults.

Meanwhile, Osaka moved into the fourth round of the U.S. Open after defeating Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. This is the first time Osaka has reached the fourth round at any major since the 2021 Australian Open.

Gauff and Osaka will face each other in a highly anticipated match, with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake. The young American will be looking to avenge her 2019 loss and continue her impressive run in this year's U.S. Open, where she is the defending champion.
