U.S. Senators call for enhanced wildfire response efforts by USDA
In a recent development, the Department of Agriculture has terminated probationary workers within the Forest Service earlier in the year. However, the exact number of workers affected remains unspecified.
The terminations have raised concerns, particularly as the fire season approaches and the Forest Service grapples with filling gaps left by workforce reductions. The concern is that the loss of these workers could potentially impact the Forest Service's ability to handle wildfires during the fire season.
It's worth noting that "red card" employees, whose main jobs aren't in firefighting but have certifications to assist, make up a significant portion of the Forest Service workforce. Approximately 1,400 red-carded employees have been lost due to earlier rounds of workforce reductions.
The recipients of a recent letter were Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. The letter, sent by Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and John Curtis (R-Utah), urged Secretary Rollins to increase the number of Forest Service employees qualified for wildfire duty. The request came from the Biden administration, highlighting the urgent need for additional staff in the forestry agency.
Interestingly, the terminations of probationary workers were not mentioned in the earlier letter sent to Secretary Rollins. However, it's been reported that some of the terminated workers were later rehired after legal challenges.
The rehiring of some terminated workers did not fully compensate for the loss of employees in the Forest Service. This is because the reductions were mainly through deferred resignations encouraged by the Agriculture Department.
The timing of the terminations is not specified in the article. However, the concern arises as fire season progresses, and the Forest Service's struggle to fill gaps left by workforce reductions becomes more apparent.
The letter was sent on Wednesday, adding a sense of urgency to the situation. The Forest Service's ability to manage wildfires during the upcoming fire season hangs in the balance, and it remains to be seen how Secretary Rollins will respond to the senators' request.
