UAE authorities grant trademark for goods produced by prison inmates under the brand 'Edmaj'

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) has taken a significant step towards rehabilitating inmates and promoting social responsibility with the registration of the "Edmaj" trademark. This initiative, reflecting the ADJD's commitment to social responsibility, aims to enable inmates to play a constructive role in society.

The "Edmaj" initiative, part of the Department's determination to balance justice with humanity, combines human, social, and economic dimensions. It provides vocational training to inmates to aid their reintegration after release, and empowers them by securing the trademark, which was issued by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, for a period of ten years.

Counselor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the ADJD, stated that the registration of the "Edmaj" trademark empowers inmates and supports their reintegration into society as productive members. Beyond legal protection, the trademark highlights the quality of work produced by inmates, boosting the marketing of these products as a pioneering model that turns challenges into opportunities.

The trademark gives the products an accredited identity, paving the way for future expansion in line with international standards. It also grants exclusive ownership of the centres' products to prevent unauthorized use, ensuring the initiative's continuity on solid legal and operational grounds.

The institution that has protected the products made in rehabilitation centres under the brand "Edmaj" for ten years is the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP). The "Edmaj" initiative promotes tolerance and strengthens community security, as it enables inmates to produce high-quality goods for the local market.

The registration of "Edmaj" trademark is a significant milestone in the Department's efforts to develop correctional and rehabilitation systems. It not only strengthens institutional trust, but also boosts the marketing of these products, making them more appealing to consumers. The "Edmaj" initiative covers a wide range of handmade goods, including wooden and metal crafts.

In conclusion, the registration of the "Edmaj" trademark marks a significant step in the ADJD's commitment to rehabilitating inmates and reintegrating them into society as productive members. It also highlights the Department's efforts to develop correctional and rehabilitation systems, promoting tolerance and community security.
