Ukraine celebrates its national flag; Russia advances further
The Ukrainian Independence Day, marking 34 years since the country's independence from the Soviet Union, is being commemorated today. However, the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which will have lasted exactly three and a half years by the end of the day, continues to cast a shadow over the celebrations.
In the Donetsk region, south of Konstantinovka, the Russian army claims to have captured the village of Kleban-Byk. The commander of the Russian army who allegedly carried out the occupation is Lieutenant General Yevgeny Yershov. However, neither Ukrainian nor Russian military observers have confirmed the capture of Kleban-Byk on their maps, and the ongoing Russian advance in eastern Ukraine has not been confirmed by independent sources.
The capture of Kleban-Byk, if confirmed, would mark another settlement capture by the Russian army in the ongoing conflict. If true, it could potentially encircle Ukrainian troops in the neighboring town of Shcherbynivka, where the situation remains uncertain due to the potential encirclement and the presence of a dam in the area. The General Staff of Ukraine only reported attacks on Shcherbynivka in its morning report.
The Ukrainian flag, a symbol of hope for Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territories, was being celebrated in Moscow as well. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the flag symbolizes liberation for those rescued from Russian captivity. The dam in the area could pose a challenge for a possible Ukrainian retreat if the reports of Kleban-Byk's capture are true.
As the conflict continues, the Ukrainian Independence Day serves as a reminder of the country's resilience and determination to maintain its sovereignty. The celebrations this year are marked by a sombre tone, as the ongoing conflict has resulted in numerous casualties and displacement of people. The Ukrainian people remain hopeful for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and a return to normalcy.
