Ukrainians mark their 34th Independence Day at California's Capitol, amidst ongoing peace negotiations for the ongoing war
In the heart of California, the Ukrainian community gathered to celebrate their 34th Independence Day on the steps of the Capitol in Sacramento. The event was a display of unity as people lifted Ukrainian flags and voices, a testament to their unwavering spirit.
Olivia Babin, a development coordinator for the Ukrainian American House, made a statement, acknowledging the challenges that recent Ukrainian immigrants have faced. She mentioned that some immigrants became illegal almost overnight due to the pause on processing work documentation, and many are struggling with anxiety.
However, the community's resilience was evident as they came together to celebrate their independence. Babin also stated that they are praying for their homeland's sovereignty and that justice will be completed for Ukraine.
The children of recent Ukrainian immigrants, like one young boy who has been in the United States since 2011, shared their experiences of being introduced to the American way of life. His parents found opportunities in the United States that they did not have in Ukraine.
The celebration was also a reminder of the community's resources. The nonprofit organisation, Parasolka, has been helping Ukrainians in Sacramento navigate immigration services. They have been translating documents and providing support to those who have fled to the U.S.
Svitlana Konopatska, a founder of Parasolka, emphasised the organisation's commitment to helping Ukrainians. She highlighted their work with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and their Ukrainian Support Services (USS) program, which provides case management and support to Ukrainians in Sacramento and other parts of the U.S.
As the community celebrated, they also looked towards the future. The Trump administration is pushing for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, offering a glimmer of hope for the future of their homeland.
Despite the challenges, the Ukrainian community in Sacramento continues to thrive, demonstrating their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Their Independence Day celebration was a powerful reminder of their strength and unity.
