UN Discusses Mines with Cherdchai

In a recent development, the United Nations (UN) has taken notice of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Thai-Cambodian border region, following a series of landmine incidents that have resulted in injuries and loss of life for Thai soldiers.

On August 28, Thailand's ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Cherdchai Chaivaivid, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the matter. The discussion centred around Cambodia's use of landmines and the "post-ceasefire situation" along the border.

The meeting appears to be a response to concerns regarding Cambodia's use of landmines in the border region. However, it is not yet clear whether Cambodia has violated the Ottawa Treaty, which bans the use of landmines.

The crisis was escalated when a Thai soldier lost his leg after stepping on a landmine near Hill 350, close to Ta Kwai temple ruins and the border with Cambodia. This incident brought the number of Thai soldiers who have lost limbs since mid-July to six. Moreover, there have been reports of additional Thai soldiers being injured in landmine blasts.

The clashes resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides have been ongoing for weeks. In response to these incidents, Mr. Cherdchai showed Mr. Guterres footage of Cambodian soldiers handling PMN-2 type landmines on Thai territory.

The Thai Ministry has expressed grave humanitarian concern over these landmine incidents on Thai territory. In a statement, they called for immediate action to address the issue and ensure the safety of all parties involved.

In a positive development, the United Nations Mine Action Service has expressed readiness to support demining efforts in the region. Furthermore, nations such as the United States, China, and Malaysia have been engaging in diplomatic activity to maintain the truce between Thailand and Cambodia.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is hoped that the UN and the international community will take decisive action to resolve this humanitarian crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected.
