Unacceptable attack on an Asian delivery worker in Bucharest denounced by President Nicusor Dan: "These actions are unbearable"
In the heart of Bucharest, an unfortunate incident took place on August 26, where an Asian food delivery worker was assaulted in District 2. The attacker, a 20-year-old man, struck the worker in the face while shouting xenophobic slurs.
The assault was filmed by the attacker and has since caused widespread outrage. Romanian President Nicușor Dan strongly condemned the incident, calling it an intolerable act of xenophobic violence. President Dan expressed solidarity with the delivery worker and urged authorities to treat the case as a hate crime.
The confrontation ended when an off-duty police officer, Andrei Jianu, intervened and restrained the suspect with the help of colleagues. The attacker has since been ordered into 30 days of pre-trial detention, and the case is being investigated as racially motivated.
The assault occurred against a backdrop of heightened anti-immigrant rhetoric in Romanian politics. The AUR vice president, Dan Tanasă, wrote on Facebook that Romanians should refuse food deliveries handled by workers from Africa or Asia. However, no explicit confirmation of such a Facebook post by Tanasă in August has been found in the provided sources.
In response to the incident, Tanasă rejected claims that his posts may have encouraged the assault. He insisted his position was about protecting Romanians' safety, not targeting people based on origin. Tanasă accused media of exaggerating his influence and argued that violence in Romanian cities stems from failed government policies, not his remarks.
President Dan emphasized that words can have real, sometimes dramatic consequences. He stated that anyone living and working in Romania deserves protection and equal treatment. Civil society groups denounced Tanasă's post, and Marian Godină filed a criminal complaint accusing him of inciting discrimination.
In a new statement, Tanasă said if he had the power, he would use it to build hospitals, highways, and decent salaries for Romanians. He did not admit any responsibility for the assault.
President Dan expressed concern over the rise of xenophobic rhetoric in Romania and urged politicians to be mindful of the impact their words can have on society. The delivery worker, from Bangladesh, sustained minor injuries and required up to two days of medical care. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of unity, respect, and equality in our diverse society.
