Unattended Luggage Leads to Prisoner Release: Federal Police Investigate Missing Owner's Case in BPOL NRW

On September 1st, an unattended hard-shell suitcase was reported on the S1 train at Bochum Central Station, causing a series of events that disrupted train operations.

The train driver alerted the authorities around 5:05 PM, prompting the Federal Police to respond. The suitcase was initially visible to the deployed forces, but later, it was found to be empty after the disposal team evaluated the images.

In response to the incident, the Federal Police urged travelers not to leave their luggage unattended. Such actions can lead to loss and unnecessary police measures, and in this case, resulted in significant delays in operations as tracks 5, 6, and 7, as well as the pedestrian tunnel, were cordoned off.

The Federal Police's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit was called in to investigate the potential threat. They X-rayed the suitcase, but it was not visible on the scans.

Despite announcements at Bochum Central Station, no owner came forward for the suitcase. The Federal Police have initiated an investigation to determine the owner and are reviewing video footage as part of the investigation.

The costs associated with such measures can be claimed from the person responsible. If you have left your luggage on the train or at the station, please inform the railway company immediately. For further information, contact the Federal Police Directorate Sankt Augustin, Dortmund Press Office, or Björn Dahle at the provided contact details. Alternatively, you can visit www.bundespolizei.de for more information.

The Federal Police's appeal to prevent leaving luggage unattended is due to the potential for loss and extensive police measures. The police emphasize the importance of taking responsibility for personal belongings to avoid such incidents in the future.
