Unauthorized access: Non-sanctioned websites providing National Identity Number (NIN) verifications, in defiance of NIMC's blacklist
In a recent development, two unlicensed websites, idfinder.com.ng and championtech.com, continue to operate despite being confirmed as unlicensed by the Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
As reported on Friday, NIMC blacklisted five "data harvesters" for illegally collecting personal information of Nigerians. Among these blacklisted websites, idfinder.com.ng and championtech.com are still online, albeit with idfinder.com.ng restricting new user signups.
Championtech.com, in particular, allows users to verify National Identification Numbers (NIN) and buy data and cable subscriptions. It was active on Monday afternoon, raising concerns about the security of personal data.
Last week, an article on our website detailed how AnyVerify sold personal data for ₦190 (13 cents). Following this report, AnyVerify's website was taken down.
The existence of these unlicensed personal data verification websites has sparked questions about data privacy and the management of NIMC's database. NIMC insists that licensed partners or vendors are not authorized to scan or store NIN slips, but to verify NINs through approved channels.
It is important to note that these unlicensed websites pose a significant risk to the privacy and security of personal data. Users are advised to verify the legitimacy of any website before sharing sensitive information.
In a similar incident, XpressVerify, an unauthorized website, sold the personal information of millions of Nigerians before it was taken down in March 2024.
In response to these concerns, NIMC has taken down two other websites, trustyonline and verify.ng. However, the commission's efforts to ensure the safety and security of personal data are ongoing.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for individuals and organisations to prioritise data privacy and security. By being vigilant and informed, we can collectively work towards a safer digital future.
