College Basketball Season Kicks Off with High Expectations and Anticipation

After a packed offseason filled with coaching changes, transfer portal drama, and speculation about Coach K's future, the college basketball season has returned for the 2022-2023 season. The first games tipped off on Tuesday, November 8th, and the excitement is palpable.

This season will be Coach K's last, marking the end of an era in college basketball. The Duke Blue Devils, under his leadership, have been a force to be reckoned with, and fans are eager to see how the team will fare without him.

One team that is already making waves is McNeese State. With impressive victories over VCU, Michigan, and UAB, they have proven themselves to be a formidable opponent. Despite coach Will Wade being suspended for the first ten games of the season due to a recruiting scandal, McNeese State is currently 23-3 and projected as a 12 seed. They shoot it better than Indiana State from deep (40% for 5th in the NCAA), but are not nearly as reliant on the three ball (only 33% of their shots come from deep).

Another team to watch is the Grand Canyon Antelopes. They are 24-2 and would likely be an 11 seed if they win the WAC tournament. The Indiana State Sycamores, currently ranked 22-5, were in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1979. They are currently ranked 16th in the country for three-point shooting and are better inside the arc (2nd in the nation). 50% of Indiana State's field goals are three-point attempts.

Yale University's basketball team, the Yale Bulldogs, also has a 13 seed and has been to the tournament three times since 2016. Patrick Grudberg '24, the Sports Section Editor for the college newspaper, is keeping a close eye on the team.

The college basketball analysts believe that UConn Huskies were the clear favorites to win the championship. Led by coach Danny Hurley, the team has repeated as National Champions in college basketball. However, they are currently struggling and will need to win their conference tournament to get into the tournament, despite being a team that made the national championship three years ago.

There are also several potential Cinderella teams that could make a splash in the NCAA tournament. James Madison University, VCU Rams, and Morehead State must win their respective conference tournaments to secure a guaranteed spot in the tournament. The Samford Bulldogs, with a record of 23-4, would be around the 13 seed line if they can win their conference tournament. They are lethal from deep (2nd in the nation at 40.5%) and are led by all-name team legend Achor Achor.

Yale's sophomore player, Danny Wolf, is averaging 14 points, ten boards, two assists, and a block per night and is considered a burgeoning star. The Indiana State Sycamores play five out and every player on the court, including their center Robbie Avila, can shoot from three.

The offseason for college basketball was filled with drama and excitement, and the season is expected to be no different. With Coach K's final season, potential Cinderella teams, and top-ranked teams like McNeese State and Indiana State, the 2022-2023 college basketball season is shaping up to be one to remember.
