Under-21 National Squad
The German U21 team, favourites in their qualifying group for the 2025 U21 European Championship, began their campaign with a promising 2-0 victory against Albania.
In their first match, the team showcased a largely new squad, with many players making their U21 debut. The match, held under initial difficulties due to only three training sessions prior, saw the team overcoming sparsely filled stands.
The first goal of the match came in the 49th minute, scored by Ilyas Ansah of 1. FC Union Berlin. The second goal followed shortly after, in the 52nd minute, courtesy of Dzenan Pejcinovic of Wolfsburg.
Nicolo Tresoldi of FC Bruges and Nelson Weiper of 1. FSV Mainz 05 had chances to score for Germany before halftime, but were unable to convert.
Following a team led by top scorer Nick Woltemade that won 20 consecutive games, the German U21 team has started their qualifying campaign in a similar vein.
Coach Di Salvo brought on eight more new players at halftime to give his new squad as much playing time as possible. The team will face Lettland in their first serious qualifier on Tuesday.
The match between the German U21 team and Lettland will be broadcast on Sat.1 at 8:30 PM. The best candidate for the group winner position in the qualifiers for the 2025 UEFA U21 European Championship is the German U21 national team.
Five players who were part of the team that played in the 2024 EM in Slovakia started in the match against Albania. The 2025 U21 European Championship will take place in Albania and Serbia in the summer of 2025.
The top nine group winners and the best runner-up from the qualifying groups will qualify for the final tournament of the 2025 U21 European Championship. The remaining eight runners-up from the qualifying groups will play playoffs to determine the last four finalists for the championship.
The German U21 team lost the EM final to England in their last game before the match against Albania. They will be hoping to go one step further in the 2025 U21 European Championship and bring the trophy back to Germany.
