Turin's Lingotto Underpass Reopens Early

The Lingotto underpass in Turin, Italy, is set to reopen to traffic tomorrow, two weeks earlier than originally planned. The structural reinforcement and conservative restoration project, commissioned by the City of Turin, has cost a total of 4.8 million euros.

Workers have been working diligently in the underpass section between Millefonti Park and Corso Unità d'Italia for several months, completing the structural reinforcement work in concrete, restoration of damaged parts, and protection from rain. The sections involved in the work have also had their road surfaces and horizontal signage redone, adapting the infrastructure to current road regulations.

The initial plan for the restoration of the entire underpass has been revised, and no further sites or closures are planned for the Lingotto underpass. However, the ramp to access the Lingotto tunnel from Via Nizza will remain closed until the end of September.

The underpass, built with different construction types between the 1930s and the Post-War period, is now safer and more durable thanks to the necessary works carried out. The Smat site where the median sewer collector is being built will remain open in the underpass.

The closure of the tunnel connecting Corso Corsica to Corso Unità d'Italia was originally scheduled to continue until September 26, but the reopening comes earlier than anticipated. The intervention on the underpass section between Via Nizza and Corso Unità d'Italia began in October 2022, and the work in this section has been completed.

The intervention in the remaining part of the Lingotto underpass from Via Nizza to Corso Corsica will not be carried out, and the underpass will remain open, with the Smat site where the median sewer collector is being built.

The project for the renovation and reinforcement of the Lingotto Tunnel has been a significant investment for the City of Turin, aimed at ensuring the safety and longevity of this important infrastructure. The reopening of the Lingotto underpass is a testament to the successful completion of this project.
