Understanding Dementia Thoroughly for Improved Insight
The City Library of Landshut is set to host the public trial of the "Hands-on Dementia" dementia trail on November 26th and 27th. This trail, provided by the "Niederbayern Dementia and Care Specialist Office", aims to foster understanding and empathy among people without dementia when dealing with those affected in everyday situations.
The "Hands-on Dementia" trail is not a therapeutic or diagnostic procedure for suspected illness. Instead, it simulates daily life challenges for people with dementia, allowing visitors to experience feelings of confusion and negative emotions to foster a deeper understanding of those affected by dementia. Library staff will guide participants through the trail.
The trial comes at a time when the number of dementia patients in Bavaria is on the rise. Currently, approximately 270,000 people aged over 65 in Bavaria are affected by dementia. By 2030, this number is expected to reach 300,000, and by 2040, it is projected to reach 380,000. Around three-quarters of these patients are cared for at home.
The "Niederbayern Dementia and Care Specialist Office" has been at the forefront of providing resources for those affected by dementia. In 2019, during the first Bavarian Dementia Week, they created eight dementia trails.
In addition to the "Hands-on Dementia" trail, the City Library also offers specialist literature and guides from the field of geriatric care and dementia. The event will take place in the lecture hall of the Salzstadel from 10 am to 5 pm.
The goal of the "Hands-on Dementia" trail is to make people without dementia more sensitive in dealing with those affected in everyday situations. Participants will be exposed to challenging situations to learn the importance of empathy when meeting people with dementia. The City Library aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia through accompanying specialist literature.
We encourage everyone to participate in this valuable event and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those living with dementia.
