Democracy in Focus: Holy Cross Faculty Discuss the Past, Present, and Future

In a recent panel discussion at Holy Cross, faculty members from various departments gathered to discuss the ancient practice of democracy and its relevance in today's world. The event, titled the Democratic Futures Forum, was organised by the McFarland Center and brought together professors from the Classics Department, Political Science, and Russian Studies, among others.

The panel, moderated by Tom Landy, director of the McFarland Center, delved into the acknowledgement of human error in the ancient practice of democracy in Athens, as highlighted by professors from the Classics Department. They also emphasised the importance of local engagement in democracy, a point raised by a professor from the Political Science Department.

President Vincent Rougeau, a legal scholar, underscored the importance of the Constitution as a framework for modern law. He was one of the faculty members participating in the panel.

The discussion was far-reaching, touching on topics such as civil society under far-right dominance, local protest dynamics, organisational bans and far-right movements, collective organizing and movements research, movement parties and parliamentary speech in Latin America and Europe, state violence and resistance movements, women’s movements and international perspectives, among others.

During the Q&A section, a student asked why the panel had not mentioned former President Donald Trump and his inability to peacefully transfer power. The panel responded by explaining the importance of taking a wider, more theoretical perspective on democracy. Another student asked what young people can do to protect democracy, to which an associate vice president responded by emphasising the importance of compromise.

The event was part of the Elections Forum series at Holy Cross, which began in 2020 and is helping to keep the campus community engaged and informed for the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election.

Elsewhere on campus, the 46th Annual Festival of Lessons & Carols took place on Thursday, December 5th at 8 pm. The event, a cherished tradition, continues to bring the Holy Cross community together during the holiday season.

Commonweal Magazine, the oldest independent Catholic opinion journal in the United States, celebrated its 100th anniversary last week in New York City. President Rougeau is a member of Commonweal Magazine's Board of Directors.
