Unemployed individual sentenced to six years in prison for setting ablaze a motorcycle at Matang apartment, threatening guards with a cleaver.

In a court session held on September 4 at the Sessions Court in Kuching, Malaysia, Wan Mohammad Adenan Wan Umar, a 44-year-old individual, was sentenced to six years in prison and fined RM5,000. The sentence was handed down for committing mischief by fire, under Section 435 of the Penal Code.

The incident occurred at Residensi PR1MA Premier Matang in Kuching, around 3.30pm on Aug 27. Wan Mohammad Adenan was charged after he set fire to his own motorcycle at the block, causing damage to the walls and floor of an apartment block. The fire was extinguished by other residents before a security guard arrived.

Prior to this incident, Wan Mohammad Adenan had no previous convictions of any other criminal offenses. However, he also faced charges under Section 506 of the Penal Code for threatening to cause grievous bodily harm with a meat cleaver. He was accused of brandishing the weapon at a guard and his colleague, who attempted to apprehend him after he attempted to flee. Wan Mohammad Adenan was subdued and handed over to the police.

In a separate prosecution, Wan Mohammad Adenan pleaded guilty to a charge of committing mischief by fire in the Magistrates' Court. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff and Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar.

It is important to note that the new charge is not related to the mischief by fire offense. The sentencing for the criminal intimidation charge is yet to be determined, with case management fixed for Oct 14, 2025.

Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan granted bail of RM2,000 with one local surety for Wan Mohammad Adenan, following his initial appearance in court. The damage caused by the fire was approximately RM1,000.
