Unexpectedly Erects a Barrier: A Barrier Unexpectedly Emerges
In the heart of Essen, Germany, a sudden closure of a popular cycling and walking path has caused quite a stir among residents and commuters. The German Railway is responsible for the closure, which has been fenced off with an almost two-meter-high barrier.
The path, which crosses over a motorway, has been closed for safety reasons and to ensure secure passage during railway track renewal or repair works. However, the city of Essen is concerned about the potential for accidents due to the sudden closure and lack of proper signage, especially in low light conditions.
Mayor Rolf Fliß, one of the sources for this article, expressed his concerns, stating, "The closure of this path is a major traffic hazard, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists who may not see the fence in low light conditions and risk injuring themselves."
The city has equipped the fence with lights for night-time visibility to mitigate this risk. Despite this, the closure is causing inconvenience and frustration among city residents due to the need for long detours.
The dispute between the city and the German Railway might be the cause of the closure. The old bridge, no longer needed by the railway, is reportedly at the centre of the disagreement regarding the use of the bike path.
One resident expressed their displeasure about the situation in a post to local media, stating, "I used to enjoy my morning walks on this path. Now, I have to take a long detour, and it's not safe."
After Tuesday 12 PM, the city plans to dismantle the fence itself if the German Railway has not removed it. The city spokesperson provided this information, adding that the city views the closure as a significant inconvenience and safety concern.
The article will be further reported on Local Time Ruhr at 7:30 PM on 9 September 2025. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
