Unexplained Events Surrounding Dustin Johnson's Current Situation
Dustin Johnson, the 41-year-old American golfer, has had an illustrious career, but recent years have seen a shift in his focus. Since joining LIV Golf in June 2022, Johnson's path has been marked by victories, setbacks, and introspection.
Johnson, who was once ranked 13th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), made a controversial move to LIV Golf, a new league backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The move was reportedly facilitated by a $125 million contract.
Since then, Johnson has won the inaugural LIV Golf Individual Championship in 2022, a feat he achieved with one event to spare. However, his decision to focus primarily on LIV events has had an impact on his OWGR standing. Since the start of 2024, Johnson has played in eight Majors and missed the cut in five of them. As a result, his current world ranking stands at 573rd.
Johnson's inconsistent performances in LIV events and missed cuts at some PGA tournaments have led to a drop in his LIV Golf league standing. He currently sits 24th, a far cry from his 1st place finish in the inaugural Individual Championship. In 2023, Johnson finished fifth in the Individual Championship, and the year following, he placed 14th.
Despite these challenges, Johnson remains optimistic about his game. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, he expressed his belief that his game is just as sharp as anywhere. He also shared that he thinks he has another six years in him before retiring.
Johnson's career has been marked by significant milestones. He became World No.1 for the first time in February 2017, and in 2020, he won his second Major title at Augusta National. Six years prior, he had won his national open, a victory that came after he was described as one of the best players never to have won a Major Championship.
As Johnson ponders retirement, he finds himself in the same league as Rory McIlroy, who is currently World No. 2. McIlroy, just a year younger than when Johnson left the PGA Tour, continues to challenge for top honours.
Johnson's career in golf has been a rollercoaster ride, filled with triumphs and setbacks. As he looks towards the future, it remains to be seen what lies ahead for the veteran golfer. One thing is certain, however: Dustin Johnson's impact on the sport of golf will be felt for years to come.
