"United Efforts for Strength: Germany Financially Bolstering Russia's Military Conflict"
In the heart of Germany, a Telegram group named "Bruderschaft Motohelfer" has been actively collecting donations for over three years among the Russian-speaking population. The group, led by Nikolai Fast, boasts around 5,500 members.
Fast founded the group shortly after Russia's attack on Ukraine, initially to support stranded Russian truck drivers in Germany. However, the group's focus has since expanded to include humanitarian aid in the Donbass region and, reportedly, appeals for aid for units of the Russian army.
Fast, a German citizen who was trained on the Leopard tank in the German army and worked as a tiler in the Frankfurt am Main area, denies that the camouflage nets are funded by donations, claiming to receive them for free. He regularly posts photos to prove purchases of medical products and equipment, worth around 1,000 euros and 2,600 euros respectively, but the actual purchase cannot be verified.
Russian state broadcasters and military bloggers have taken notice of Fast, with numerous articles about him. Fast is also a member of the "Night Wolves," a nationalist biker group with ties to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
The question of criminality depends on how one legally classifies Russia's attack on Ukraine and the respective military actions. Professor Michael Kubiciel, a Criminal Law expert, suggests that donations to the group could potentially constitute an accessory to a crime, if the donors are aware that the donations promote crimes under the International Criminal Code.
Fast documents every step of his journey on video and records messages for the group during the drives. He buys products in Russia, either because they are cheaper or to avoid border controls, and loads them into his minivan decorated with the logo of the group.
Fast's apartment was reportedly raided, but at least two public prosecutors' offices involved with Fast have denied this to CORRECTIV. Fast was the subject of two proceedings by the Public Prosecutor's Office in Hannover in 2024, but both were discontinued.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Fast continues actively supporting the Russian army since the Russian attack on Ukraine by coordinating donations and humanitarian aid, mixing support for stranded Russian truck drivers in Germany with fundraising efforts for Russian military units.
