United States-China Rift: Xi Urges Modi on mutual friendship, as dragons and elephants meet at SCO Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China. This marks his first visit to China in seven years.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi emphasized India's commitment to building ties with China on the basis of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. He also congratulated Xi Jinping on China's successful presidency of the SCO.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed great pleasure to meet Prime Minister Modi in China. Xi Jinping noted that the year 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations and stressed the need to handle the relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective.

Both leaders agreed to strengthen trade and investment, reduce the trade deficit, and enhance people-to-people exchanges. They also underlined the need to proceed from a political and strategic direction to expand trade ties and reduce the trade deficit.

The prime minister noted that the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has resumed and direct flights are being resumed between the two countries. Xi Jinping stated that China and India are two of the most civilizational countries and part of the Global South.

The visit comes at a geopolitical juncture, against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's tariff war. In a previous interview, PM Modi stated that it is important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order.

Modi invited Xi to the BRICS Summit that India will be hosting in 2026, and Xi offered China's support to India's BRICS Presidency. Xi Jinping also emphasized the importance of China and India upholding multilateralism, a multipolar world, and more democracy in international institutions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived at the 25th SCO Summit for a rare four-day visit. Putin briefed Modi on Alaska talks with Trump, and India stressed the end to the Ukraine conflict.

However, the search results do not provide information about the special representative of China for border management negotiations with India. The 10-member SCO bloc has steadily expanded its size and influence over the past 24 years, with major additions including India and Pakistan in 2017, Iran in 2023, and Belarus in 2024.

Modi also stressed the importance of "peace and tranquility" on the border areas for continued development of bilateral relations. The SCO Summit marks a step in strengthening bilateral ties between India and China.
