United States Issues Threats to Russia Regarding Potential Retaliation
In an emergency meeting held at the UN Security Council on Friday, the U.S. envoy, John Kelly, called for a meeting between Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The meeting was convened following a massive strike on Kyiv that resulted in over 20 deaths, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, August 28.
During the meeting, Kelly reiterated the warning from U.S. President Donald Trump that America may impose new sanctions on Russia if the war continues. He stated that the strikes in Ukraine "call into question Russia's commitment to peace."
The Guardian reported that Putin has repeatedly ignored Trump's calls to stop the war against Ukraine. Washington has not taken significant steps to pressure Moscow and force it to halt its military actions in Ukraine.
Kelly demanded that Russia cease its strikes in Ukraine. He also emphasised that the new sanctions against Russia were proposed and supported by Germany and France as part of the European Union's efforts. The sanctions focus on additional oil companies like Lukoil and related service providers, extending the oil price cap mechanism to more European companies involved in transporting refined Russian oil products. This initiative was reported around early 2024.
The U.S. warning was issued during the emergency meeting, which was held to discuss the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The location of the potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky, if it occurs, was not specified in the report.
The emergency meeting at the UN Security Council serves as a reminder of the international community's concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the need for a peaceful resolution.
