In the vibrant city of Columbus, Ohio, Lauren Sands '24 is making a significant impact in the nonprofit sector. After growing up near the Oberlin College athletic complex, Sands attended the prestigious institution, drawn by its close-knit community. It was here that she not only excelled in volleyball but also found her passion for sociology and Africana Studies.
Upon graduation, Sands took on a role as Democracy Fellow at the Human Service Chamber (HSC) of Franklin County. Her post-graduation work has been centred around voter engagement, service, and contributing to policy-making. Sands is now a Policy Associate at the HSC, a role that involves writing updates on policy developments, creating advocacy tools, and spreading awareness about public policy.
Sands' journey in the nonprofit sector began when she worked as a paid employee for the Ninde Scholars program. This experience led her to find ways to become a mentor, observing the impact of the program firsthand. Her work aims to contribute to policy-making, and understanding why social issues exist has been rewarding for her in this role.
Sands has found a sense of community in the nonprofit sector, despite living in a much bigger place. She spent a summer helping students gain real-world skills through cooking, and her work with various Columbus-based nonprofits addressing social issues continues to grow.
